While thinning hair is a common reality of aging, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re powerless to prevent hair loss or stimulate hair growth! In this post, you’ll find 11 simple remedies that can help slow the progression of hair loss and hair fall, so you can maintain healthy, vibrant hair at any age.
While my own hair was thick and plentiful for much of my life, I started noticing an uptick in hair fall around the time I turned 40! I started seeing a LOT of loose hair in my hands whenever I washed it, which was disconcerting, to say the very least.
Knowing that my mother experienced the same thing with her hair, I’ve been able to make some peace with the reality of my thinning hair. But with the help of the hair loss remedies in this post, I also feel confident that I’m doing as much as I can to support the my hair and scalp health and minimize hair loss!
Watch the video at the end of this post to learn how I use a red light therapy face mask to benefit my hair too!
What Causes Hair Loss?
The hair growth cycle occurs in three distinct stages: active growth, resting, and shedding. Even a healthy person who isnโt experiencing excessive hair loss may lose up to 100 hairs per day!
Hair loss is a common side effect of aging and typically affects men earlier than women. By age 40, about 50% of men will experience some degree of androgenetic alopecia (AKA male pattern baldness) while around 50% of women will experience female pattern baldness by age 70.
If you experience hair loss that is sudden or patchy, you should talk to your doctor, as it could be a symptom of a more serious condition. Conditions that can lead to hair loss include:
- Hormonal changes from pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid problems
- Certain medications, like those taken for high blood pressure, depression, and arthritis
- Radiation treatment
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Stress
11 Simple Ways To Stop Hair Loss
1. Eat More Protein And Omega-3s
Protein is present in every cell in your body and plays a crucial role in many bodily processes, including hair growth. A 2017 study of people with hair loss found that many had an amino acid deficiency, meaning they werenโt eating enough foods containing amino acids that are critical for protein production, and by extension, hair growth and strength.
If youโre struggling with hair loss, make sure youโre getting enough protein in your diet from sources like seafood, lean meats, eggs, and legumes. Fatty acids like omega-3s are also important for maintaining hair and scalp health, and you can get more of those in your diet from sources like seafood and flaxseed.
2. Donโt Forget Your Vitamins
And speaking of diet, donโt forget about vitamins! One thatโs particularly important for stopping hair loss is vitamin A. Studies have found that retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, can increase hair growth and prolong its active growth phase.
There are plenty of foods that are good sources of vitamin A, like leafy greens, carrots, and sweet potatoes, or you can get it in the form of daily supplements of vitamins and minerals. A collagen supplement can also support hair health and growth as a source of amino acids and antioxidant protection.
3. Talk To Your Doctor
Losing your hair early in life or without explanation can be a symptom of hormonal imbalance. If you have hair loss and are experiencing other symptoms of hormonal imbalance, like weight gain, muscle aches, and joint pain, consult your doctor for medical advice right away. If it is a hormone issue, treatments like hormone therapy can stop hair loss and other symptoms.
But it isnโt just your hormones that can play a role in hair loss. Other conditions can contribute to hair loss too, like stress, anemia, pregnancy, and certain medications. Your doctor can help you determine if one of these other issues may be causing your hair loss.
4. Avoid Smoking, Alcohol, And Caffeine
Certain habits, like smoking and drinking alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, can worsen hair loss. Smoking reduces blood circulation throughout the body, and blood circulation to your scalp is an important factor in hair growth and retention.
Drinking alcohol and caffeine can contribute to hair fall in a couple of different ways. Too much of either can suppress your immune system, which plays an influential role in the hair growth cycle. Alcohol and caffeine can also lead to sleep problems, and we all know how important sleep is to our overall health and wellness!
5. Reduce Stress
Stress and tension are some of the most common causes of hair loss and hair fall. If youโre experiencing hair loss and youโre also under a lot of stress, you should make it a priority to find effective ways to calm your mind and relax.
Some of the most effective practices for reducing stress include meditation, yoga, spending time outdoors, and making time for hobbies. Find one or two stress reducers that work for you and incorporate them into your schedule regularly to help prevent hair loss.
6. Exercise Regularly
Exercise is not only another good way to reduce stress, but it also improves your overall health. And a healthy body means longer, stronger locks! :-)
7. Try An Essential Oil Treatment
Scalp massages can help stimulate hair follicles and increase blood flow, both of which can help stop hair loss and promote hair growth. Itโs also easy to incorporate essential oils like lavender, rosemary, and thyme into your scalp massages, which, according to a 1998 study, can be a safe and effective treatment for hair loss due to alopecia areata (AKA patchy hair loss.)
Additionally, a 2018 review found that coconut oil may be useful in preventing hair damage from grooming and exposure to UV rays. Combining a scalp massage with coconut oil and one of the essential oils listed above is a great way to take advantage of all these hair benefits at once!
Just add a few drops of lavender, rosemary, or thyme essential oil to a small handful of coconut oil, then gently massage the oils into your scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it for 1 hour, then shampoo your hair as usual. Use this relaxing remedy once a week for healthy hair.
8. Apply Onion, Garlic, Or Ginger Juice
In addition to essential oils and coconut oil, other natural juices can be used to help stop hair loss as well. For instance, a 2002 study of individuals with patchy hair loss found that participants who applied onion juice twice every day had significantly increased hair re-growth than those in the control group.
Juice from raw garlic, which is a close cousin to the onion, is thought to be effective for this type of treatment too. And finally, many people report success with using ginger juice to stop hair fall. (Though personally, I think Iโll stick with the essential oils!)
9. Apply Green Tea
Green tea contains antioxidants, which may help protect against hair shedding and boost hair growth. Make a strong green tea by steeping two bags of green tea in 1 cup of water, then apply the tea to your scalp. Leave it on for an hour, then rinse.
10. Style Your Hair Gently
Depending on the cause, stopping hair loss can take some time. But in the meantime, you can help reduce hair fall by being smart about how you handle and style your hair.
Here are a few things you can do to be gentle with your hair care and help prevent hair loss:
- Set your hair dryer on cool and low settings, and minimize your use of flat irons.
- Donโt dye your hair more than one or two shades lighter or darker than its normal color to minimize damage from chemical treatments.
- If you use hair gel or hair spray, donโt wait for it to dry before you comb through itโif you do, the hardened hair is more likely to break.
- When your hair is wet, use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush, and comb it lightly to avoid any pulling and tugging.
- Avoid unnecessary brushing, combing, curling, or straightening. Excessive use of these tools and techniques will weaken the hair at the root level.
- Avoid taking hot showers, which can sap your hair and scalp of their natural oils and make your hair dry and brittle.
- Wash your hair with a mild shampoo, as harsher formulas may cause hair to become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. Look for words like โgentleโ or โsoothingโ on the label.
11. Clean Your Scalp After Sweating
Whether you exercise regularly or just sweat a lot, you donโt want to let a lot of sweat accumulate and sit on your scalp. Not only can sweat dehydrate your hair, but it can also lead to clogged pores, bacterial growth, and even fungal issues (yuck!)
Do you have any tips or tricks for stopping hair loss?

I am surprised you didnโt mention this one since you are doing on a regular basis. Bleaching regularity to keep roots bleach also contributes to hair loss. I apologize if you mentioned this, I only scanned the article.

At 84, my hair is not yet gray, due to the red in my medium brown hair.
My hairdresser told me that not having permanents, and keeping hair short helps to combat hair loss.
Long hair tends to pull the hair down and this can make it fall out more quickly.
1 cup Black, or green, tea brewed strong mixed with 1/2 cup aloe vera juice as a final rinse every two weeks works Wonders for me!

This is really bad, it falls out very much like I have a hard disease. I really hate this. Thank you for all the information you provided, this is very useful. visushaarkliniek.nl

To combat this situation, you may opt of scalp micro pigmentation, which is an advanced, reliable ,affordable and non invasive method than conventional surgery. A center that uses this technique is Scalpa Carolina, based out of Charlotte, North Carolina.

I heard about a product called โMonat” and saw that a lot of peopel were having success with it. Both my husband and mom and now several friends have tried it – and it works! My mom just came to see me about an hour ago and we were both talking about how much fuller her hair now looks!. It was so bad before that your could see her scalp through her hair in the front. My husband’s receding hair line is completely gone in the front now and the crown of his head is filling in very nicely. Itโs still thinner than the rest of his head, but sooo much better than before.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I don’t suffer from thinning hair at the moment, but I am very interested in hair health. I’d like to add a point for others to consider, which is to look into “avoiding sulfates and silicones” in shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. Both go hand in hand because you need sulfates to remove silicone buildup.
More natural ways of cleansing hair include co-washing and eliminating commercial shampoos completely by using products like rye flour and other no-poo methods; natural conditioning products can include essential oils, carrier oils, aloe vera, and store-bought silicone-free conditioners. If you’re interested, look up “no poo” (meaning no shampoo) to get some further information.
Giving up commercial hair products takes a while to get the balance right, as every hair type will respond differently, but it’s worth it in the end!

I used to have very full eyebrows but now I have quite a few bald areas and not from over plucking as I never plucked there. Has anyone come across anything for this? I’ve started using coconut oil nightly.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.recently I saw a discussion on this and a doctor said thyroid issues can cause loss of eyebrow hair, especially the outside one third of the eyebrows. You might want to get that checked out. I have found this to be true with my own formerly full eyebrows!

Coconut oil is great! In fact, I would apply it pretty thickly before bed, and wash your face in the morning. :-) Castor oil would also work wonderfully!

After switching to an organic non foaming shampoo I went from very thin hair to growing back my very thick hair. Being a cosmetologist I should have known better. It has been several years since the switch and I just passed my 65th birthday with tons of hair.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I do everything healthy. Food and vitamins are the key. I started losing hair and went straight to Biotin and Collagen. I am in my late 70’s and my hair is thick as can be. It’s long and when I comb or brush it, what seems like a lot of hair coming out, actually isn’t because it is long and just looks like there’s a lot. It is acceptable to lose 100 hairs a day, I have been told. Also, when I go to bed, I do a massage of light slow scraping of my scalp. Very light. Keeps the pores open. I color my hair and you would think that would be bad. Not so for me, it just makes the hair feel healthier and I like it. I will never go grey. I also pile the hair above my head while sleeping so I don’t pull it out while laying on it.

Everyone on my Dads side says I inherited his moms hair type. Grandma still had lots of hair when she was older. Iโm hoping Iโll get lucky like that. I agree a lot of the hair thinning problems are probably genetic.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have (fe)male pattern baldness, as does one of my sisters, and we both take a simple measure to conceal the fact. There’s a product called Toppik (other brands too) made up of tiny keratin fibres, which you lightly shake onto your scalp along your part line and anywhere else your scalp shines through. Different colours are available. You might need a shade darker than you think. My hair still looks brown at 70, as the grey is mixed in pretty evenly, and the dark brown Toppik makes my overall hair look darker, even though it’s only near the roots. Be sure not to miss out the crown, which isn’t visible as you look in the mirror. Not cheap, but I don’t use every day

I’m 65 and this product has my hair looking and feeling like it was when I was much younger. Find on Amazon. Amazing product and chock full of vitamins and minerals to support your hair!

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have not experienced that. If you do, there lots of natural ways to remove unwanted hair on Pinterest and from what I read these work!!
Biotin is a great supplement for hair loss. Iโve been taking Solaray Chromium Biotin for about 10 years – after Iโd find more and more hair in my shower drain. Works like a charm. Whenever I run out and stop taking it for a few days the hair loss comes back so I know itโs working!

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Have you noticed any side effects from the biotin? I was just reading up on it and I have IBS and all of the side effects are the same symptoms I get from my IBS so I’m afraid to even try. I have had positive results from taking Collagen and L-Lysine. I take it for my nails. they were paper thin and tore easily, now they are strong.
